The deadline for submissions has now passed
If you are a young researcher passionate about microwaves and sustainability, this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work and honour the legacy of Prof. Tom Brazil.
The Tom Brazil Award Essay Competition is open to all students turning 31 after the end of 2026 enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. or graduate degree programme in microwave electronics.
This annual competition honours the memory of Tom Brazil an outstanding contributor to the microwave community and a valued colleague and friend to many.
In 2026, the essay theme is:
Advancing Sustainability in or through Microwaves
If you have an idea about how sustainability in society could be promoted or improved using microwave technologies, or how the microwave industry could be supported to become more sustainable then we want to hear from you!
A two-stage approach is taken to select the Tom Brazil Fellowship Award winners:
- Interested candidates were invited to submit a four-page abstract summarising their idea related to the competition theme by 27th April 2026
- Following a review process, a short list of authors will be requested to submit an extended version of their contribution with a maximum of 4000 words, or 12 pages. Short-listed authors will be informed.
- Short-listed authors will have until 28th August 2026 to submit their extended essays to [email protected].
The best essay will be awarded a prize of €2,500. For the second and third place, prizes of €1,500 and €1,000 are granted, respectively. Please note that you must have your 31st birthday after 2025 to be eligible to participate in this competition.
